Most PCs and laptops have an Ethernet port that can be used to connect to the Internet without a router. We will tell you how to do it via a network card, step by step.

  1. To set up the Internet on a PC without a router, connect the cable from the provider to the Ethernet port.
  2. Next, make sure that automatic IP acquisition and your registered MAC address are selected.
  3. On the panel on the right click on the monitor icon and select «Network and Internet Options».
  4. In the additional network settings find «Configure adapter settings».
  5. Right-click on the Ethernet icon and select «Status» from the drop-down menu.
  6. Find «IP version 4(TCP/IPv4)» in the menu and click on it. Then click «Properties».
  7. In this menu «IP Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties», make sure that these items are ticked (as in the picture):
    • ☑ Obtain IP address automatically
    • ☑ Obtain DNS server address automatically

Changing the MAC address of the network card

  1. Next, you need to check the current MAC address of the device and verify it with the one you should have. You can check it with technical support by phone or in chat. You can also check it in your personal cabinet in the «Services» — «Internet» section.
  2. Once you know the MAC-address, you need to check it with the current one.
  3. In the panel on the right click on the monitor icon and select «Network and Internet Options».
  4. In the additional network parameters find «Adjust adapter settings».
  5. Right-click on the Ethernet icon and select «Status» and then «Network Connection Details» from the drop-down menu.
  6. In the «Physical Address» line, we find the information we need and check against the one we recognised.
  7. If the MAC address does not match, right-click on the Ethernet icon and click «Properties» — «Customise» — «Advanced» in the drop-down menu.
  8. Find the line «Network address/Network address/Locally Administered Address».
  9. Tick the input field and save the desired address.
  10. Click «OK».

After updating the MAC address, restart the network connection as shown in the photo. Right-click on the Ethernet icon and select «Disconnect». After a minute, click on it again, but select «Enable». Now you can check the Internet.

The current network parameters can be checked in the «Network connection information».

Ip 169.X.X.X

There are cases when, with correctly configured settings, you get 169.X.X.X instead of the required IP address. This means that the equipment did not receive the correct data from the server and Windows issued a technical IP. In this case the command in the terminal that re-requests the IP address will help.

To invoke it, right-click on the Windows icon and select «Find». We write «Command Prompt», right-click and select «Run as administrator».

In the terminal window that appears, enter these commands one by one:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Commands in the terminal

The terminal allows you to check the network parameters of your PC. You can view your IP and MAC address (physical address), check the availability of Internet resources and the stability of the connection.

  1. Launch the «Command Prompt» application and in the opened window enter the ipconfig /all command.
  2. Check the availability of a resource (e.g. your favourite website or game server). Your PC sends a request and receives a response from the correct IP address. If all responses are received, it indicates a stable connection. You can also see the number of packets sent, received and lost after the command is completed.
